Thursday, Jan. 6 - Needs and Possibilities for the Future

Discuss Michael Wesch's TEDxNYED talk (a "cautionary tale")

New Guinea - introduction of new media (census books and maps)
"sometimes even when we try to use media, the media actually uses us"
"these changes affected everybody - there's no opting out of new media"
media are not just tools - media mediate relationships - how people are connected, who is connected to who/what
razor's edge between hopeful possibilities and ominous futures
need people to me open, daring, caring, self-motivated, voracious learners
time to move students from being knowledgable to knowledge-able
students create wiki - collectively they know more about the world than the professor
simulation of global problems and world history - what do we need to know for "this" [global future] test?

"New media changes everyone; there's no opting out" ~Wesch

Examples of Augmented Reality

How might this technology be used in the future?
What changes (good and bad) will it bring in society?

GE ecomagination - wind turbine and solar energy
Buzz Lightyear photobooth
US Postal Service - virtual box simulator

Museum of London: StreetMuseum
Similar to location-based Augmented Reality Mobile Apps Layar and Wikitude

Mixed Reality - Nokia demo

Friday, Jan. 7 - Gesture Based Computing

Greetings

Good morning,
I'm sorry to miss our class together, but I know you will have a great time with Mr. Garcia. As it turns out, our topic for today is probably something he is quite interested in and knowledgable about -- gesture-based computing.
Enjoy!
~Ms. Moorman

Get Ready

Teacher laptop should be set up to project since students can't access YouTube and will be watching the videos together as a class anyway - no helicopter pilot headphones today ;)
Students should grab your laptops and navigate to the class wiki as usual (tinyurl.com/21cglobal). If wikispaces is still blocked, Mr. Garcia can give you the direct links to the TED talks below.

Intro (5 min)

Please start by watching this video demonstration of SixthSense technology. Mr. Garcia will project the YouTube video embedded below.
Important Note: I could have had you watch the Pattie Maes TED Talk where she explains everything you'll be seeing - what it does and how it works - but I purposely chose for you to watch this version, which is just a visual demo. Why? I want you to talk to each other as you watch. You should ask questions and make comments as they pop into your mind. If you want Mr. Garcia to rewind and show you something again, he can.

Discussion #1 (10 min)

After watching the video, please have a brief class discussion around the questions you all are wondering about.
Here are some additional questions for you to consider:
  • What are the significant differences between this technology and an Internet-connected mobile device (such as an iPhone)?
  • What is different about the way the user interacts with this device, and how do you think this will impact society? Think about what Michael Wesch showed us about how "media mediates relationships" and "changes [in technology] affect everyone."
If you're still wondering about what Pranav was doing in some of the scenes, I think you'll get the answers in the next video . . . if not, you can skim the Interactive Transcript (top right) on the SixthSense demo TED Talk page

The Thrilling Potential of SixthSense Technology (15 min)

I hope by now you are very interested and curious to know more about how Pranav Mistry created SixthSense technology and what can be done with it. Please watch Pranav Mistry's TED Talk. If you want to read the text of his talk, just open the interactive transcript (top right).

Discussion #2 (10 min)

Feel free to discuss your own ideas and questions in addition to these:
  • What do you think about Pranav's idea of a future where computing will merge with the physical world?
  • Do you think this kind of technology will help us be more connected to our physical world? Why or why not?
  • What can you imagine next? What would like to be able to do with this sort of technology in the future?

For Fun

If you have 7 or 8 minutes left, watch David Merrill's demo of Siftables (Now commercially available from Sifteo)
If you only have 2 or 3 minutes left, watch the ad for the Gesture Cube (He's not touching the cube at all!)
If you have 4 or 5 minutes left, you can watch Gesture Cube and the Augmented Reality kitchen

A Final Look at 21st Century Global Leadership

What does it mean to be a leader?
Can you be a follower and a leader at the same time?
How is leadership affected by the "disruptive innovations" of Web 2.0 and social media?
How might emerging technologies continue to change the shape of leadership in the future?

Tuesday, Jan. 11 - Final Reflection

Please write a reflective analysis of what you feel you've learned this semester -- through your participation in the Flat Classroom Project and from the 21st-Century Global Leadership class in general. To guide your reflection, you will need to refer to the Global Leadership Performance Outcomes found on the Course Description page of this wiki. Please post this reflection on your isajourneys blog; you may cross post to the Flat Classroom Project Ning if you'd like. Your post should be tagged isa, 21cGL, and reflection plus any other tags you feel are appropriate.
